Songkhla and Hat Yai are located in Southern Thailand, not too far from Thai-Malay border. Both are popular destinations among travelers of Malaysians, Singaporeans and also Indonesians.
Most of their destinations are for shopping or just for transit spending time before continuing their journey to Bangkok, Phuket or other places. So, most of them are spending time at least just for one day or two exploring the city.
Actually there are a lot of places and attractions to explore in Songkhla and Hat Yai. There are many temples, floating markets, museums, zoo, and many others. But, if you don’t have much time to explore all the attractions, at least you have to spare you time exploring these 5 attractions for one day trip.
1. Samila Beach Songkhla
Samila beach is a popular beach in Songkhla. It is clean and beautiful. It has park area with its benches, blue sky, white sands, happy smile hahahaa like you can see it on the picture above.
Not too far from this area, there are a lot of restaurants. And some of the restaurants provide halal food.
After walking around the beach, don’t forget to take a picture with the golden mermaid statue. It is a statue at Samila beach which is a symbol of Songkhla city. I think it is just not perfect if you visit Songkhla and miss it.
2. Tang Kuan Hill Songkhla
Tang Kuan Hill provides lift ride for everyone who want to reach the hilltop. First, go to Tang Kuan Hill lift station and buy the ticket. It is 30 baht. After reaching the hilltop you can see the beautiful city view and sea view from there. You can also put your lock at the love lock and throw the key(just like we saw it in movie).
Satisfied exploring the hilltop, there is one thing you have to try. It is coconut ice cream. Very fresh, sweet and delicious. For you muslim travelers, you don’t need to worry because it is halal. You can see the halal sign there.
3. Reclining Buddha Wat Phranon Laem Pho Koh Yo Songkhla or Wat Hat Yai Nai
Reclining Buddha at Wat Phranon Laem Pho is a big Reclining Buddha in Songkhla. There is actually another big one in Hat Yai. It is at Wat Hat Yai Nai. But i think it is enough to visit one of these two if you do not have much time to explore both.
4. Hat Yai Municipal Park
Hat Yai Municipal Park is a large park in Hat Yai which covered from a lake to the hill. It has many attractions to explore. There are Ice Dome, cable car station, a temple with the big standing Buddha, city view that you can see from the hilltop and many more.
Klonghae Floating Market is popular floating market located in Thanon Klonghae Hat Yai. In this floating market you can find a lot of Thai traditional foods and drinks. You can also find the unique way between the vendor and customers doing their transactions by giving the food and money using small basket.
All these five popular places can be reached by songthaew except Shamila Beach and Tang Kuan Hill. To go there you need to pay extra for it (about 20 baht per person), because both Shamila Beach and Tang Kuan Hill are outside the songthaew’s set routes.
Another way to explore these all five popular places is by Tuk Tuk(the smaller version of songthaew). I think it is more efficient and cheaper if you rent it together with your friends for your one day trip. Last time I rent it, I with seven friends of mine just need to pay 100 baht per person for our one day trip.
In my previous post I wrote about the best Tuk Tuk driver in Hat Yai. If you want to know it more please read here. I wrote it based on my own perspective. I really recommend his Tuk Tuk for you who want to rent it to explore Songkhla or Hat Yai.
For Moslem travelers, while exploring Songkhla and Hat Yai you don’t need to worry about halal food and prayer room. There are actually many halal cook shops around the city. And although not all the attractions have prayer room, mosques are not too difficult to find. It’s better to download an app named Thailand Muslim Friendly (an app that helps Muslim travelers find halal restaurants and hotels, mosques and halal tour, travel news and guide books).
